Sikkim has long been known as the land of orchids, and now the capital has a beautiful new place to celebrate them. The Orchidarium at Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari Park on Ridge Road is Gangtok’s blooming spot, showcasing the rare Himalayan and exotic orchids that make Sikkim one of India’s richest floral destinations. Whether you love nature, photography or simply a calm walk, it deserves a place on your Gangtok itinerary.

What is Orchidarium?

The Orchidarium is a modern orchid experience centre created to showcase Sikkim’s floral and ecological heritage. Developed as part of the state’s 50th Statehood Golden Jubilee celebrations, it blends conservation, research and public awareness in one calm, green space.

Visitors can explore living orchid collections, botanical models and educational displays that explain how orchids grow, where they are found and why protecting them matters. Interactive signage and digital ticketing make the visit easy and enjoyable for all ages.

A World of Orchids Inside

Gangtok’s blooming spot brings together native Himalayan orchids and exotic species from across the world, from tiny, delicate blooms to large, striking flowers.

Highlights of the Orchidarium:

  • Live collections of native and exotic orchids.
  • An orchid exhibition area.
  • Detailed botanical models of orchid species.
  • Educational displays on conservation and cultivation.

Why Sikkim Is the Land of Orchids

Sikkim is home to around 560 orchid species, making it one of the most orchid-rich regions in India. Many grow wild in the state’s forests, clinging to trees and rocks at different altitudes. The Orchidarium brings this natural wealth together in one place, so you can experience it without heading deep into the hills.

Why Gangtok’s Blooming Spot Caught the Nation’s Eye

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Orchidarium in April 2026 during the closing celebrations of Sikkim’s 50th Statehood year, and President Droupadi Murmu toured it in May 2026. Both praised Sikkim’s extraordinary biodiversity, and their visits quickly made Gangtok’s blooming spot one of the most talked-about places to visit in the city.

Perfect for Every Kind of Traveller

The Orchidarium offers something for visitors of all ages and interests. It is particularly suited to:

  • Nature and flower lovers.
  • Families with children.
  • Photographers looking for colourful close-ups.
  • Students and anyone curious about Himalayan plants.
